Artist Emily Maude @emilymaudey is hosting Charleston Inspires Auction in aid of Charleston Trust, and we are so honoured to be a part of this after being so inspired by Charleston and the Bloomsbury Group for our latest collection. Charleston Farmhouse has been an inspiration to so many artists, writers, designers and gardeners over the years and it is time to give back. Charleston Trust receives no public funding and is looking to raise £400,000 to prevent imminent closure.

It costs over £1m a year to conserve the house and garden, to give a platform to important conversations, art and ideas through their festivals, events and exhibition programmes, and to open and share Charleston with visitors. Every penny needed to do this they have to raise themselves through ticket sales, through spend in the shops and café, and other fundraising activities. And that’s stopped – overnight due to Covid-19.

As part of the auction we have created a piece especially for this event inspired by Charleston House called ‘Poppies and a Pear’. Painted by Hattie and printed onto a silk scarf 90cm x 90cm we hope this will really help the auction, along with 165 other artworks that have been donated. The auction opens on 1 June 2020 on Emily’s  Instagram account  and bids will close at 4pm (BST) on 20 June 2020. Artists including Teena Vallerine, John Derian, Angie Lewin, Luke Edward Hall, Claudia Rankin, Alice Pattullo, Rory Hutton and many more have generously contributed artworks.   From 1 June 2020, Emily will post each of the 165 artworks on her Instagram account with the lot number, artist bio, medium, size, postage costs and reserve (if applicable).   To place a bid, simply write the amount you would like to bid in £s as a comment on the Instagram post of the artwork. The final bids will be at 4pm (BST) on 20 June 2020. The winning bidder for each artwork will be contacted by Emily on Instagram and will be put in touch with the artist to pay any shipping costs.   The winning bidder will then need to pay for their artwork(s) by making a payment to Charleston’s  Emergency Appeal  and sending a receipt to the artist. Please do not opt to add Gift Aid to your payment as Charleston is not able to claim Gift Aid on auction sales.   Once the artist has received the shipping costs and the receipt they will send the artwork to the winning bidder.    You can also donate any amount you’d like here.
